Robinson Hilario

Robinson Hilario

Hometown: Cabarete, Dominican Republic
Date of birth: May, 26 1994

* Name and surname: Robinson Hilario

* Age: 24
* Nationality: Dominican
* Worst Crash: I was doing a mega loop on a 40 knot wind day and a line snapped. I free fell from maybe 30 meters and broke 3 ribs.
* Never travel without: my Bose noise cancelling headphones – they are game changers!!

* Favourite spot in the world: Cabarete, Dominican Republic ;)
* On my iPod (music): always a mix of bachata and reggaeton. I’m currently listening to Bad Bunny.
* Inspired by: The circumstances I was born into. While Cabarete is a paradise, it is one of the poorest towns in all the DR. Kiteboarding is both my passion and the hand that pulled me from poverty.
* Favourite Meal: arroz con pollo y habichuelas (rice and beans with chicken)

* 1 piece of advice to other kiters: Smooth seas never made a skilled sailor-practice in different conditions, often, and don’t be afraid to crash.
* Goal in sport?: In freestyle, continue to push myself to learn new tricks and show the world something they’ve never seen. I also would love to participate in the 2024 Olympics for foiling.

* I want to travel to: my wife’s home country Tunisia! Would love to kite in Djerba. Second would be South Africa.

* Gear I use:

  • Board: The 50/fifty board or NHP Carbon are amazing. I also prefer my boards larger.
  • Kite: 50/50 with a small bar!

When were you happiest?
Always when I’m in the water

Which living person do you most admire, and why?
Richard Branson – a serial entrepreneur and a kiter, he’s a reminder that I can achieve more in life.

What is your greatest fear?
Losing the people I love.

Which book or movie changed your life?
El conde de Montecristo (The Count of Monte Cristo)

Who did you want to be when you were growing up?
I have always loved fixing things and so if I didn’t kite, I’d love to be a mechanic for performance cars and motorcycles.

What is top of your bucket list?
Ice fishing in Alaska

What is the worst job you’ve done?
Kite caddy: setting up and packing up kites but never getting to fly them.

Where would you like to live?
I already live in my own paradise, Cabarete.

How do you relax?
I love to spearfish when there is no wind. I am also a big foodie so I love to cook and have a nice dinner with friends.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
If kiting became more established in the international competition circuit, like any other organized sport.

How would you like to be remembered?
As someone who is fearless and always remembered where he came from.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
I don’t need a lot in life to be happy.

Where would you most like to be right now?
Maybe not right now, but I would love to go back to Madagascar.

Tell us a secret - why Nobile?
A lot of the time people think when you’re sponsored, you don’t necessarily love the product – you’re just advertising it. But as a professional kiter, the gear you use is integral to your performance. The attention to detail to ensure their equipment is top quality is incredible: the double layers of fabric and stitching on kites as an example. Given Nobile’s expertise in snowboarding as well, it really lends a lot of great features to the design of kiteboards, such as the adjustable foot pad with the same fastening as a snowboard. The boards are a great combination of flex and pop– they are honestly the best boards I’ve ever tried.
